Currently, hydrogen and ammonia are the only two truly zero-carbon alternatives for ship fuel. Hydrogen is the alternative that requires more fundamental new-thinking, especially if considering fuel cells as the power plant solution. In the second part of our low carbon story, we present in brief our own hydrogen-fuelled ship design.

The low carbon story – part one
In the first part of our three-part blog series about low carbon ship design, we focus on our efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of ships to achieve zero or very low carbon operation. We also present our views on modern energy-efficient technologies and design methods in shipping with the help of concrete examples.
Offshore energy goes green Part 2: Environmental Performance FPSO case study
Measuring environmental performance is important, but analysis in its traditional way can be challenging. Deltamarin has developed in-house simulation tools for assessing environmental performance, the benefits of which Jaakko Lappi discusses in our newest blog.
Cost modeling – Case Flexens
Does hydrogen lie at the heart of future fuels? Replacing diesel-powered ships with ships powered by alternative fuels is the theme we are focusing on today as Jarkko Nurmi approaches the subject by conducting a cost estimation assessing the feasibility of each alternative. The estimation was conducted for Flexens’ Power2AX project.
DeltaWay – introducing AI to ship concept development
Our previous blog texts introduced digital design tools designed for estimating a vessel’s lifetime, propulsion power and the energy and environmental footprint. This blog opens up the part of the digital design that is closest to the physical representation of the ship, and explains how it combines it all together. We call this part of […]
Project performance by project planning – A case story
What contributed to the successful project planning of Stena Estrid? In the sequel to our project performance blog series, Jari Mäki highlights how project planning is crucial for project performance, as is proven by the case story of Stena Estrid.
Offshore energy goes green Part 1: Energy balance & simulations
Our blog series continues with a post from Jaakko Lappi that focuses on our efforts to achieve future sustainability goals, especially from the perspective of the offshore segment.
Deltamarin´s Cost Model – Cost estimating as a service
With our newest blog post, Jarkko Nurmi starts a series of articles dealing with costs management in shipbuilding and shipping industries. Read what Jarkko has to say about cost estimating during concept design phases.
Digital ship sails on all seas and in all weathers
In the previous blog text, we described the methods that we have for evaluating vessel environmental footprint and energy efficiency. One of their major outcomes was that the operating profile of the vessel is of extreme importance. This blog continues our digital design series by introducing DeltaSeas, which provides answers to this specific question.
In the heart of the digital ship
This blog continues our digital design story by opening up the actual parts in our digital design toolbox. This time we are focusing on DeltaKey, the numerical representation of the processes and systems within the ship hull.
