construction until delivery of the vessel.”
“Unfortunately, the global financial crisis
hit in 2008, and the situation for the whole
shipping industry changed dramatically. The
Horizon project was put on hold and later
cancelled.”
“When the shipping market slowly started
to recover, we met with Deltamarin in 2012 for
newbuilding design and specifications. The
original Horizon Class project was upgraded
to the New Horizon Class and marked the
first Panamax design for Höegh Autoliners.
With a wider beam, the New Horizon class
had a capacity of 8500 CEU (Car Equivalent
Unit). Following the same working procedure
as for our previous Deltamarin projects, we
went back to China and placed orders at the
Xiamen Shipyard for a total of six vessels.”
The New Horizon vessels were delivered
between 2015 and 2016. The first vessel,
Höegh Target, has already been in operation
for more than five years and, according
to Mørken, the design has proven to
have excellent performance with low FO
consumption.
“The working culture I experienced with
Deltamarin is that the personnel are always
eager and ready to take on any challenges
presented. Deltamarin is a very professional
company and I have thoroughly enjoyed
working with it over the years.”
There have been two major successes that
Mørken highlights.
“Working with Deltamarin on the Airbus
vessels for the transportation of aircraft parts
was a great success for Höegh Autoliners,
our French partner and the customer. The
vessels attracted attention worldwide, both
in newspapers and at high political levels.
We became a part of a large logistic project
between countries in Europe (such as France,
Germany, the United Kingdom and Spain) and
were invited to the inauguration ceremony of
the world’s largest aeroplane. The ceremony
was hosted by the French President, and
heads of states from Germany, UK, and Spain
were in attendance. Our vessel was presented
on a large screen and this was indeed a proud
moment for the company.”
“The second success was the development
of the New Horizon vessels. These vessels are
the largest PCTC vessels in the world, with an
8,500 CEU capacity. The vessel’s design allows
for considerable flexibility in types of cargo
that can be loaded and makes the vessel more
efficient. This has added greater flexibility to
our fleet and increased the range of services
available to our customers. Building on our
sustainability focus, the New Horizon vessel
has been given DNV GL’s class notification
“CLEAN” for cleaner design.”
Höegh Autoliners has strongly addressed
the importance of environmental
performance throughout the vessel life cycle.
“A top score for environmental performance
was a prerequisite for the successful New
Horizon class design. It started with the
optimal design of the hull lines. Working
together with the experienced Deltamarin
