FRANÇOIS CADIOU
I think the world has changed
dramatically over the last 20 years.
Many design companies have closed or
downsized, but Deltamarin has resisted
and found new ways to develop. The
shipping and the shipbuilding industries will
go through major changes in the years to come.
Companies have to transform themselves in the right
ways at the right time. I still believe things will turn out
for the better, and Deltamarin has succeeded in getting
through very difficult times.
There is strong pressure to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions. Sometimes people blame sea transportation
for excessive emissions. Actually, when you look
at transportation at sea, it’s the most economical
transportation method per mile. Because it accounts for
probably more than 90% of all transportation, it’s easy
to criticise it. We do, however, need to find new designs
and ways of doing things.
People also criticise globalisation but,
in my opinion, this has been a good
development. Sometimes we forget
about that. It’s one of the best ways to
gain access to other nations. When I was
a child, I would never have imagined that
I would have friends in China. It may sound a
little dramatic when I say that, but it’s because we
have all these interactions that the world is probably
becoming wiser. Of course, we can always complain,
but when we look back in history, we can now say that
the world has become better.
And I think ships and shipbuilding have contributed to
a better world. We can always look at the bad things
like pollution, but designers like Deltamarin have
contributed significantly improving the situation.
