The year 2006 saw changes within
the company, as Mika Laurilehto was
appointed Managing Director of Deltamarin.
He inherited the mantle from Jukka Laiterä,
who switched posts and became Managing
Director of Deltamarin Contracting, a newly
established company whose main activities
were concept development, R&D, project
management, turnkey contracting service
and training. Marketing, sales, business
development and HRM services were
also concentrated into this new company.
Deltamarin continued to specialise in
consulting, design and engineering.
“The cruise side expertise we have is
useful and applicable to the offshore business
as well,” said newly appointed Managing
Director Laurilehto.
Deltamarin cooperated with several
established offshore companies, including
the Swedish GVA-Consultants and Dutch
Bluewater Energy Services, one of the
leading FPSO operators in the world, for
which Deltamarin did conversion work on
three FPSOs. Deltamarin also had very close
collaboration with the Norwegian Aker
Kvaerner Engineering and Technology.
After a couple of years of hard work, a third
of Deltamarin’s €20-million turnover came
from offshore design and consulting work.
“Deltamarin’s executive board made
an extremely smart move back then by
strengthening their offshore side,” says the
current Managing Director of the company,
Janne Uotila. “The offshore side and
traditional shipbuilding markets move in
slightly different cycles, so they balance each
other out. We had a big drop in activities in
2013, but we still had one project ongoing,
which was our biggest contract up till then,
the Pioneering Spirit (originally named
Pieter Schelte) platform installation and
removal & pipelaying vessel. Thanks to
this major offshore project, we stayed afloat
and were still able to develop our company.
We maintain active relationships with our
offshore clients and listen carefully for
any developments, because we want to be
involved in whatever happens. From the
company’s perspective, it’s smart that we
stand on three feet: passenger ships, offshore
vessels and cargo ships. The offshore side
helps our personnel develop, and we’ve
got multiple talents in the house, which is a
huge advantage for our company, but it’s also
motivating for the employees.”
“That’s one of our leading ideas: we have
the ability to offer different types of projects.
We might do offshore for a couple of years,
then ro-pax and then cargo ships. This is an
excellent thing for our personnel and our
company.”
