The new decade saw
momentum returning to
the shipbuilding industry
after the global economic
crisis of the late 00s. Moving
into the 2010s, Deltamarin
had become a leading naval architectural
and marine engineering consultancy with
offices in six countries: Poland, Croatia,
Brazil, Malaysia and China, in addition to the
joint venture in Monaco. It employed 400
people, 250 of whom were in Finland. In
addition to design and engineering services,
the company was providing contracting
services and had successfully ventured into
the offshore market. Moreover, Deltamarin
was continuing its growth in the Chinese
market and Deltamarin (China) Co., Ltd. was
established in Shanghai to play an interface
role between the parent company and local
clients. Deltamarin (China) has since grown
from a small representative office into a design
company in its own right and today employs
35 people.
At the start of the decade, Deltamarin
sought further success in China by
aiming to establish a fully operational network
of partnership companies. This network
would enable the construction of advanced
new bulk carrier types. Deltamarin was
also doing shipyard evaluation for yards
themselves and for owners considering
shipyards for their new projects with which
they had not previously had contact. The
company assisted owners who had chosen
to build in China by identifying potential
individual yards.
In addition to this, Deltamarin introduced
its own contracting services that would
support the designing, planning and building
of more advanced ships. The goal was to
integrate all these services into a package
that would cover the entire design and
engineering, project management, planning
and procurement.
In a different sector, Deltamarin Group
continued the engineering project for
the Pioneering Spirit (originally Pieter
Schelte) project for Allseas. Interviewed in
Maritime Finland in 2011, Managing Director
Mika Laurilehto expressed satisfaction
with Deltamarin’s new niche market: “Now
prospects have improved, and things have
started to happen in the market again, but
the finance for ship transactions is still
problematic.”
In 2011, Deltamarin participated in the
design of vessels for the maintenance and
development of offshore fields. Russia also
