remained unchanged and have been further
strengthened over the years. The new owner
now enabled Deltamarin’s solid growth in the
maritime and offshore oil and gas markets.
In the past years, Deltamarin had been
celebrated for its sustainable and costeffective
bulk carrier design, among other
innovative ship concepts. With the support
of AVIC, Deltamarin was able to strengthen
development of new innovative products
and services and further improve existing
ones. Looking back, it is justified to say that
all the expectations and wishes Deltamarin
management and minority owners had
towards AVIC were completely fulfilled.
Current Managing Director Janne Uotila
recalls this time: “I wasn’t in the house myself
when the 2013 deal with AVIC was done, but
the harsh truth was that the management
had to find a solution for a generation shift
to secure the continuation of the company.
The reason why AVIC was chosen was that
our people who were negotiating with them
were able to find common ground and
faith in the fact that we would be able to
further strengthen Deltamarin together. Of
course, AVIC being Asian played a role too.
Shipbuilding was growing over there, and still
is, so it was a logical direction in which to look
for a new owner.”
Because of the severe competition in
global shipbuilding, in 2016 SASAC
(State-owned Assets Supervision and
Administration Commission of the State
Council) told Chinese entities that efficiency
must be increased by simplifying company
structures by reducing unnecessary holding
companies. That request also influenced
the AVIC and Deltamarin ownership
