In 2015, Deltamarin signed a
contract to design the world’s first
LNG handy-size bulk carriers,
leading the way for greener
shipping of commodities. The two
B.Delta26LNG vessels called Viikki
and Haaga were constructed for the Finnish
shipowner ESL Shipping by the Chinese
Nanjing Jinling Shipyard. The B.Delta26LNG
was the latest success story of Deltamarin’s
B.Delta Series, which had previously proven
its energy- and fuel efficiency. Upon its
delivery, Viikki was the world’s most ecofriendly
bulk carrier.
Deltamarin’s contract with the shipyard
covered basic and detail design, procurement
handling and site assistance for the two
vessels based on Deltamarin’s B.Delta26LNG
design. Prior to the contract, Deltamarin
performed the full concept and contract
design of the ship for ESL Shipping.
“Deltamarin and ESL Shipping experts
have been working together for two years
to develop a ship concept, which takes a
significant step by bringing commodity
transportation into a new era of greener
shipping. The trendsetting design is proof
of the Finnish blue cleantech know-how
and cooperation,” said Mikki Koskinen,
Managing Director of ESL Shipping, in
Deltamarin’s press release. “Together with
Deltamarin, we shall make shipping more
sustainable and environmentally friendly
than ever before.”
Upon their delivery in 2018, the ships
would be the world’s first LNG dualfuelled
handy-size bulk carriers, to be
bunkered with gas fuel from bunker vessels
or trucks in various ports around the Baltic
region. The LNG fuel, energy efficiency and
highly optimised hull form developed by
Deltamarin made them among the most
environmentally friendly ships at the time
to sail in pollution-sensitive areas, such as
the Baltic Sea. The ships’ emissions were
below environmental requirements, and CO2
emissions per cargo tonne transported were
reduced by over 50% in comparison to the
present generation of vessels.
“For us, the crucial thing was to design
and build economically unsurpassable ships
that would give us a strategic advantage for
many years to come in the seafaring they
were designed for,” recalls Mikki Koskinen.
“And we succeeded in that. We were aware
that Deltamarin’s hull form designs for bulkers
were quite revolutionary at the time. We came
to the conclusion that Deltamarin would be
able to give us that advantage.”
“Another reason why we were interested
in Deltamarin was its market position. The
