BUILDING A REPUTATION & CREDIBILITY
order from Boelwerf, a shipyard in Belgium.
“There was a small incident at the time,”
recounts Markku Kanerva. “I fell off a roof,
breaking my hip and femur. Boelwerf had
just received an order for the Prins Filip
ferry and they wanted Deltamarin to do the
comprehensive design. Together with Timo
Stenros, an experienced project manager, we
went to meet the yard, me still on crutches,
and pretty soon signed the first deal for
concept evaluation followed by the full design
package. That was Deltamarin’s first deal
that covered concept evaluation, contract
design, basic design, detail design and project
management responsibilities at the shipyard.
That was a crucial step for that shipyard – we
analysed the design concept produced by one
of our competitors on behalf of the shipping
company, and found several mistakes and
non-feasible solutions. So, the shipyard made
a brave decision to deviate from the owner’s
design. We had to redesign the concept and
the contract design practically from scratch.
It was our first foreign contract that included
the full package. It also proved how important
it was to have all the design features correct in
the vessel configuration from the beginning of
the process.”
“That was the real beginning for
Deltamarin. We had our internal core team
but there was also a crucial figure who gave
us the impetus and necessary support in
financing, Mikko Rönnholm, Chairman of
the Board of a local bank at the time. He also
became a member of Deltamarin Board.”
